That is the question. After all, I do some casual blogging on Tumblr, and I chronicle the events and emotions of my life in my journal. What would blogging on a site like this do for me that those don’t?
The short answer is “nothing”. I could write these words on Tumblr, in my journal… I could scrawl it on looseleaf, fold it into an airplane, and toss it off the roof of my apartment building. I could whisper it into a bottle and cork it for future generations to discover. I have unlimited options. So why Blogger?
The long answer is “because I want to.” I’m seeing a resurgence of blogs like this linked on Tumblr, and after perusing several lovely blogs, I was inspired to make my own—and by inspired, of course I mean staying up hours past my self-imposed bedtime, setting up a simple theme and clicking around my old blogs.
I honestly didn’t remember ever using Blogger before, so when I stumbled upon a 2013 relic titled “Introvert Philosophy”, my flabbers were thoroughly gasted. I wrote about what mattered to me then: school, reading, and “the potential magical properties of David Tennant’s hair”. Reading my words from over a decade ago felt like running into an old friend. I’ve gained a lot of insight since then, including the fact that I was never an introvert, but simply a very autistic extrovert. Go figure.
Now blogging is calling my name. I’ve been craving a way to practice my writing voice in a fun, low-stakes way. Tumblr is too casual; my true blog posts would be lost in a sea of half-formed thoughts and reckless reblogs. My journal is too archival; I use it to catalog my day and process my feelings, not to delve into whatever subject piques my mind. Not to mention the accompanying wrist pain… I shudder just thinking about it.
So here we are. Fabled Scrapbook: a blog where I can share the inner machinations of my mind while returning to the kind of writing I’ve been neglecting to practice since my schooldays. I’ll be writing about my interests, my obsessions, my reflections on literature & film, and whatever other fancies trip over the wool & wire tangled in my brain.
I hope this post inspires you to ask yourself: to blog, or not to blog? And could David Tennant’s hair really contain all those secrets the magicians are refusing to tell?
Yep, we need to re-evaluate David Tennant's hair. It's time.
